Simeon and Anna
Praise be Jesus Christ, now and forever. As we continue in this Christmas season, the story of Jesus' Presentation in the Temple by Luke has always held a place in my heart. In particular, the two persons of Simeon and Anna, represent all those elderly who through years of prayer, suffering and most of all experience tempered by wisdom know the presence and peace of Our Lord Jesus Christ. (Wisdom in the Old Testament was viewed by the Fathers of the Church as the feminine attribute of the 2nd Person of the Blessed Trinity.) Sadly, just because you grow old does not mean you grow in wisdom and knowledge. Simeon understood the great burden that Mary held in being the mother of our Savior. When you do meet an elderly person "who knows what life is about" you are meeting a precious gift from God that can help lead towards the purpose of life itself. Simeon was conveying the fact to Our Lady that giving birth to Our Lord was only the beginning. Have you met a Simeon or an Anna in your life? If so, then use the precious time you have with them. Take advantage of their wisdom, their experience, their knowledge and their love. Thus you will begin to be a sign "so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed." (Luke 2:35b) You are all in my prayers and heart. May Mary Mother of Flint bless you and those you love. Fr. Tom
